The Oxbow School
Mission — Think, create, and grow.
The Oxbow School—an innovative, interdisciplinary program combining visual arts with academics—helps and encourages high school students to learn and develop the skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly complex and interdependent world. Through rigorous studio art practice grounded in creative and intellectual inquiry, the program extends each student’s critical thinking abilities.
The Oxbow School is a semester program focusing on studio artmaking and interdisciplinary humanities. This program provides juniors, seniors, and gap-year students the opportunity for an intensive art experience and thought provoking academic instruction. Students have life-changing experiences and adventures while with us in California and have many opportunities to visit the city and the wilderness.
The atmosphere at Oxbow is one of artistic and social exploration combined with rigorous academics designed to prepare students for college and beyond.
We invite students to enlarge their artistic vision and enhance their technical skills in an environment dedicated to supporting artistic inquiry. Take this opportunity to further your education, expand your social horizons, explore your passion for art, and create a new foundation for your future!
We are now accepting applications for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 Semesters. For more information visit: http://www.oxbowschool.org/adm...
Visiting Artist Program
The Visiting Artist Program is one of the most compelling aspects of the Oxbow experience. There are three facets to the program: the artist residencies, the lectures, and studio visits. Taken together, these elements comprise a new model for art education at the high school level. Each semester two established artists are invited to work with students on a collaborative project. Each of the residencies is an opportunity for you to gain firsthand experience in how artists think and work. This is a unique opportunity to engage in aesthetic decision-making with artists of national and international stature.
Oxbow Summer Art Camp offers an engaging residential art-immersion program for high school students. Our 16-day sessions inspire participants to discover and develop their art practice and sense of self. Young artists experience what it's like to live and make work in community of passionate teachers, learners, and creators.
Instructed by experienced teaching artists, teens are supported through all steps of the artistic process, from idea to creation, critique, and exhibition. The first week, studio time is focused on exploring painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and printmaking. Young artists will strengthen their abilities in creative and critical inquiry as well as develop their technical skills. The second week, students propose and create a personal project, working under the guidance of a faculty advisor. Each day, studio time is mixed with participation in activities such as Inspiration Evenings, skit nights, campfires, yoga, outdoor films, Art Olympics, and visits to Bay Area galleries.
We believe there is no limit to what one can create given an environment of high-level instruction and support. Oxbow students will cultivate their art skills, connect with fellow artist peers, and create personally significant artwork. No portfolios or previous art training are required—just the desire to dive in and see what happens!
